For Willa, the wife of Roger Herot (heir of Herot Hall), life moves at a charmingly slow pace. She flits between mommy groups, play dates, cocktail hour, and dinner parties – always, with her son, Dylan, in tow. Meanwhile, in a cave in the mountains, just beyond the limits of Herot Hall, lives Gren – short for Grendel; as well as his mother, Dana, a former soldier who gave birth, as if by chance. Deciding that finding advanced alien life is too important to ignore, Captain Allison Ridgeway chooses to return to Earth, while ordering her crew to reverse engineer technology far beyond anything back home. Little does everyone involved know that the bumbling, of a few highly-evolved apes in space, hasn’t gone unnoticed; and the people of Earth have put themselves on a collision course with a far wider, and potentially hostile, galaxy.

The Cityborn
Willett, Edward
The metal City towers at the centre of the mountain-ringed Heartland, standing astride the deep chasm of the Canyon like a malevolent giant, ruled with an iron fist by the First Officer and his Provosts in the name of the semi-mythical Captain. Alania, ward of an Officer, lives on Twelfth. Raised among the privileged class, Alania feels as though she is some sort of pampered prisoner, never permitted to explore the many levels of the City. Danyl, raised by a scavenger, knows no home but the Middens. His day-to-day responsibility is to stay alive. Two very different worlds collide when Alania, fleeing from an unexpected ambush, plunges from the heights of the City down to the Middens, and into Danyl’s life. The secrets they unlock, as they flee the Canyon and crisscross the Heartland from the City’s farmlands to the mountains of the north and back again, will determine not only their fate, but the fate of the City…

Terra Incognita: Three Novellas
Willis, Connie
This collection contains three previously-published novellas: Uncharted Territory, Remake, and D.A.
Uncharted Territory: Findriddy and Carson are explorers, dispatched to a distant planet to survey its canyons, ridges, and scrub-covered hills. Teamed with a profit-hungry indigenous guide of indeterminate gender, and an enthusiastic newcomer whose specialty is mating customs, the group battles hostile terrain as they set out for unexplored regions. Along the way, they face dangers, discover treasures, and soon find themselves in an alien territory of another kind: exploring the paths and precipices of sex – and love.
Remake: In the Hollywood of the future, live-action movies are a thing of the past. Old films are computerised and ruthlessly dissected, actors digitally ripped from one film and thrust into another. Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe in A Star Is Born? No problem. Hate the ending? Change it, with the stroke of a key. Technology makes anything possible. But a starry-eyed young woman wants only one thing: to dance on the big screen. With a little magic and a lot of luck, she just may get her happy ending.
D.A.: Theodora Baumgarten is baffled and furious: Why was she selected to be part of a highly-competitive, interstellar cadet program? After all, she never even applied. But that hasn’t stopped the powers that be from whisking her onto a spaceship, bound for the prestigious Academy. With her protests ignored, Theodora takes matters into her own hands – aided, by her hacker best friend – to escape the Academy and return to Earth… only to uncover a conspiracy that runs deeper, than she could have imagined.

The Feed
Windo, Nick Clark
The Feed is accessible everywhere, by everyone, at any time. It instantaneously links us to all information and global events, as they break. Every interaction, every emotion, every image can be shared through it; it is the essential tool everyone relies on to know and understand the thoughts and feelings of partners, parents, friends, children, colleagues, bosses, employees… in fact, of anyone, and everyone else, in the world. Tom and Kate use the Feed, but Tom has resisted its addiction – which makes him suspect, to his family. After all, his father created it. But that opposition to constant connection serves Tom and Kate well – when the Feed collapses, after a horrific tragedy shatters the world, as they know it. The Feed’s collapse, taking modern society with it, leaves people scavenging to survive. Finding food is truly a matter of life and death. Minor ailments, previously treatable, now kill. And while the collapse has demolished the trappings of the modern world, it has also eroded trust. In a world, where survival of the fittest is a way of life, there is no one to depend upon, except yourself… and, maybe, even that is no longer true. Tom and Kate have managed to protect themselves and their family. But, then, their six-year-old daughter, Bea, goes missing. Who has taken her? How do you begin to look for someone, in a world without technology? And what happens, when you can no longer even be certain that the people you love are really who they claim to be? The Feed is as unique and vividly imagined as Station Eleven and The Girl with All the Gifts – exploring what it is to be human, in the digital age.
