Esslemont, Ian C
The incessant war between the bickering city states of Quon Tali rages. So engrossed are the warring lords and princes in their own petty feuds… that few notice that an upstart mage from Dal Hon has gained control of the southern seas. But some powers are alarmed. And in the meantime, as Purge and Tali indulge in what seems like a their never-ending game of war, a mercenary caught up in the fight between the two states suddenly refuses to play along and causes all sorts of chaos. Simultaneously, a pair of escapees from Castle Gris make their way across this ravaged landscape of flame and butchery. Their intention to seek out the legendary Crimson Guard. And then there’s Kellanved, who could not care less about any of this petty politicking or strategy or war. Something other and altogether more mysterious has caught his attention and he – together with a reluctant and decidedly-sceptical Dancer – traverse continents and journey through the Realms in pursuit… But this ancient mystery that has so captivated Kellanved is neither esoteric nor ephemeral. No, it is of an altogether darker and more dangerous hue. It involves the Elder races, themselves, and more specifically – certainly more alarmingly – the semi-mythic, and universally dreaded, Army of Dust and Bone. Surely, no one in their right mind would be so foolish as to embark on a journey from which none have returned? Well, no one except Kellanved, that is…

1636: the Vatican Sanction (Ring of Fire 24)
Flint, Eric & Gannon, Charles E
It’s spring in Burgundy. The flowers are out and so are the cardinals – of Pope Urban’s renegade papacy, now on the run from the Vatican’s would-be usurper Borja. Most of the Church’s senior leaders have converged upon the city of Besancon, where the Pope plans to offer an ecumenical olive branch to the other Christian denominations with which Rome has been at war. Fortunately, Urban has up-time help. He can rely upon Cardinal-Protector Larry Mazzare’s theological savvy, Sharon Nichols’ medical skills, and her husband Ruy Sanchez’s keen-eyed experience as a bodyguard-in-chief. At Gabrielle’s graveside, Max meets Ray. Over a bottle of bourbon in a dive bar, the two discuss Gabrielle’s unique connection to the city. Maybe Max can even deliver the warning in person? Ray offers him a cheap map and says the process is simple. Follow the charted moments to build up a little bit of magical clout and then find the man with the gift. Surging with liquid courage, Max takes the ludicrous tourist map and sets off. But it turns out this quest is not so easy. Golden, Christopher & Lebbon, Tim
Archaeologist Dr Geena Hodge is on the precipice of success: her team has found an entrance to an underground chamber, while searching for the Petrarch’s lost library. A documentarian is joining her team for the descent into the long-hidden structure and may be the key to extensive funding. Best of all, she is able to share the excitement of this momentous occasion with her assistant-slash-lover, Nico, whose psychic presence resonates in her own mind. Within a strikingly-preserved room – unlike any Venetian excavation – the team finds only one artefact: a small vessel that immediately mesmerises Nico. While the team investigates a slab of granite inlaid in the floor, Nico becomes transfixed by the object, and before he can be stopped, he has the urn in his hands. Then, it is broken open on the ground. And with that, the impossibly withheld groundwater begins to fill the chamber… In the clamour to escape the rapidly-flooding room and save the found texts, the team is sent in all directions. And Nico’s mind, always attuned to Geena’s, seems to go quiet. His actions in the days after the incident feel unlike him, and his consciousness seems to dissolve beneath the weight of his experience with the artefact. What insidious force was within? And what can satisfy its restless will?

After fleeing from the Covenant of St George, she’s found herself in debt to the crossroads, and running for her life. No family. No mice. No way out. Lucky for her, she’s always been resourceful, and she’s been gathering allies as she travels: Sam, furi trapeze artist turned boyfriend; Cylia, jink roller derby captain and designated driver; Fern, sylph friend, confidant, and maker of breakfasts; even Mary, ghost babysitter to the Price family. Annie’s actually starting to feel like they might be able to figure things out – which is probably why things start going wrong, again. New Gravesend, Maine is a nice place to raise a family… or make a binding contract with the crossroads. For James Smith, whose best friend disappeared, when she tried to do precisely that, it’s also an excellent place to plot revenge. Now, the crossroads want him dead and they want Annie to do the dirty deed. She owes them, after all. And that’s before Leonard Cunningham, aka, ‘the next leader of the Covenant’, shows up… It’s going to take everything Annie has, and a little bit more, to get out of this one. If she succeeds, she gets to go home. If she fails, she becomes one more cautionary tale about the dangers of bargaining with the crossroads. But, no pressure. The latest in McGuire’s fun (and Hugo-nominated!) Incryptid series keeps the series’ focus on Antimony. If you haven’t tried the Price Family’s adventures, start with Discount Armageddon (PBK, $21.95). Great fun!

A Parliament of Bodies (Maradaine Constabulary 03)
Maresca, Marshall Ryan
The city of Maradaine is vexed by the Gearbox Murders: a series of gruesome deaths orchestrated by a twisted mechanical genius. With no motive and no pattern, Inspectors Satrine Rainey and Minox Welling – the retired spy and untrained mage – are at a loss to find a meaningful lead in the case. At least, until the killer makes his most audacious exhibit, yet: over a dozen victims in a clockwork death-trap, on the floor of the Druth Parliament. The crime scene is a madhouse, and political forces conspire to grind their investigation to a halt. The King’s Marshals claim jurisdiction of the case, corruption in the Constabulary thwarts their efforts, and a special Inquest threatens to end Minox’s career completely. Their only ally is Dayne Heldrin, a provisional member of the Tarian Order, elite warriors trained in the art of protection. But Dayne’s connection to the Gearbox Murders casts suspicion on his motives, as he might be obsessed with a phantom figure, he believes is responsible. While Satrine and Minox struggle to stop the Gearbox from claiming even more victims, the grinding gears of injustice might keep them from ever solving these murders, and threaten to dismantle their partnership, forever.

Infinite Detail
Maughan, Tim
Before: In Bristol’s centre lies the Croft, a digital no man’s land, cut off from the surveillance, Big Data dependence, and corporate-sponsored, globally hegemonic aspirations that have overrun the rest of the world. Ten years in, it’s become a centre of creative counterculture. But it’s fraying at the edges, radicalising from inside. How will it fare when its chief architect, Rushdi Mannan, takes off to meet his boyfriend in New York City – now, the apotheosis of the new techno-utopian global metropolis? After: An act of anonymous cyberterrorism has permanently switched off the Internet. Global trade, travel, and communication have collapsed. The luxuries that characterised modern life are scarce. In the Croft, Mary – who has visions of people presumed dead – is sought out by grieving families, seeking connections to lost ones. But does Mary have a gift… or is she just hustling, to stay alive? Like Grids, who runs the Croft’s black market like personal turf. Or like Tyrone, who hoards music (culled from cassettes, the only medium to survive the crash) and tattered sneakers, like treasure. This has already had raves from customers. Recommended.

Oyeyemi, Helen
Perdita Lee may appear your average British schoolgirl; Harriet Lee may seem just a working mother trying to penetrate the school social hierarchy; but there are signs that they might not be as normal as they think they are. For one thing, they share a gold-painted, seventh-floor flat with some surprisingly verbal vegetation. And then there’s the gingerbread they make. Londoners may find themselves able to take or leave it, but it’s very popular in Druhástrana, the far-away (and, according to Wikipedia, nonexistent) land of Harriet Lee’s early youth. In fact, the world’s truest lover of the Lee family gingerbread is Harriet’s charismatic childhood friend, Gretel Kercheval – a figure who seems to have had a hand in everything (good or bad) that has happened to Harriet, since they met. Decades later, when teenaged Perdita sets out to find her mother’s long-lost friend, it prompts a new telling of Harriet’s story, as well as a reunion or two. As the Lees encounter with jealousy, ambition, family grudges, work, wealth, and real estate, gingerbread seems to be the one thing that reliably holds a constant value.
